ñ Can It Lower Your Lung Cancer Risk?

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

st beginning to understand the health benefits of
green tea. But, it seems sure that green tea is one of the best
things we can do to protect our health, slow down the aging
process and prevent disease. One disease of particular interest
in terms of green tea’s affect is cancer.

Cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in the
world. In fact, 300 people die of cancer every single day in
the US alone. Yet, research is showing over and over again that
the anti-oxidants in green tea may hold the power to prevent,
and even treat, many types of cancers.

And, we know that many cancers are entirely preventable, yet
continue to be a leading cause of death. Nearly all skin cancer
is preventable, simply by wearing sunscreen, and the vast
majority of lung cancer patients contract the disease after
years of smoking. Smoking is, in fact, the number one risk
factor for developing lung cancer.

But, even for smokers, there is evidence that green tea may
provide protective benefits from the very cancer for which
they’re at risk; lung cancer.

A study at the Toxicology Research Center in Korea suggests
that drinking green tea may provide protective benefits to the
lungs, even to people who smoke. In their study, they tested
four groups of people; nonsmokers, smokers, smokers who drank
green tea, and smokers who drank coffee. The smokers in the
study averaged at least 13 years of smoking.

For the study groups consuming tea and coffee, their intake was
2-3 cups each day for six months. The smokers who drank green
tea had a significantly lower incidence of sisterchromatid
exchange (SCE), the damage that leads to lung cancer, than the
smokers who drank coffee and the smokers who did not consume
any special beverage. In fact, the amount of SCE damage in the
tea drinkers was comparable with that of the non-smokers, who
showed very little sign of SCE.

This led researchers to the conclusion that drinking green tea
may help prevent lung cancer, even if you smoke. It also
concluded that drinking coffee had neither a negative nor a
positive effect on patients’ SCE levels.

So, it seems that it’s more important than ever to get your
daily dose of the anti-oxidants that green tea can provide. If
you smoke, of course your best course of action would be to
stop smoking. But, either way, it appears you should be
drinking green tea!

Sorting Out Yoga Mats For Beginners Yoga

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

rweight these days. Probably something to do with
the types of lives we live.
Even with the multitude of diets and exercise routines out
there we, as a nation, are still fat and something needs to
change.

I think that it has a lot do to with stress. Stress causes all
kinds of health problems and I believe it makes some people
gain weight or hold on to the weight that they already have and
are trying to get rid of. If we are truly going to become a
healthier country, I believe that we need to focus more on the
importance of stress relief.

One of the best and most popular ways to relieve stress is
yoga. Beginners Yoga has become wildly popular in this country
and the world over. Many people get great results by doing
simple yoga exercises regularly and these people also report
that a great deal of stress relief comes with the exercise.

Before you get started with beginners yoga there is one very
important thing you need to get your hands on – some yoga mats.
Yoga mats can be found everywhere now, even at your local
K-Mart. They can be very inexpensive so there is no reason not
to have an extra one. I keep one in my house for home exercise
and one in my car for when I go to the gym. Having two yoga
mats just makes it easier on me because I won’t be able to
forget to bring one with me or take it back inside the house.

Having your own yoga mats is crucial when it comes to doing
yoga. If you do to a yoga class without one you will quickly
find that you are the only without one. As I said, you can find
very affordable ones all over the place now so you will never
have to be without one.

I suppose that I ought to say that you really do need to use
yoga mats while doing the exercises. There is a reason that
people use them and you should follow their lead. Yoga mats
cling to the floor and make it easier for you to hold those
crazy positions without shifting or sliding around. I have, on
more than one occasion, had to learn this lesson the hard way
and I do not recommend it. Don’t forget that there is an
enormous amount of information online about yoga and how to
begin yoga safely. Beginners yoga is the start of a rewarding
experience.

A Spiritual View Of Mental Illness

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

es that occur for the many who carry within
themselves severe mental or emotional disturbance are legion,
occurring on many levels of experience. This is true for those
who are severely depressed, withdrawn, alienated, or involved
with an inner reality that is visible to themselves alone that
separates them from the world around them. For those
challenged in this way, the extreme separation from life causes
much pain and suffering, as it does also for family and friends
who must find ways of building a bridge to the one who has
become separated – who often lives alone, despite the fact that
there may be people around.

Up until now, we have looked at mental and emotional disorders
as an extreme handicap for those who live through them, a
financial burden for a society that maintains those who cannot
care for themselves, and a source of concern for families who
try to remain in loving relationship even while experiencing
hardship. Indeed, we know a great deal today about the impact
of mental illness on the self and on others. But what has not
been knowable till now is the relationship of the group of
conditions we are calling =EBmental illness’ to the realm of the
soul. As paradoxical as it may seem to the human heart and
mind, this relationship involves a choice that the soul has
made to manifest in this way – a choice to create a deep-seated
emotional or mental condition for which a great cost is paid in
life. This choice, though invisible, is very real. Perceiving
it can help us penetrate the mysterious world of the mentally
ill. It can also help us look for the hidden value and purpose
of conditions that at face value seem anything but positive in
their nature or in their effect.

The choice for illness of any kind that shapes the course of a
life or a significant portion of it is always the choice of the
individual soul, made prior to incarnating into physical life.
The soul looks at the various opportunities for learning that
could be afforded by different circumstances, and chooses what
will be most productive in terms of growth in a particular
area. In relation to severe emotional or mental difficulties,
especially those in which separation from reality is involved,
the soul makes a choice to learn from the very experience of
separation, alienation, and distortion that is the handicap
itself – to learn in the context of being deeply wounded,
deeply immersed in one’s own inner reality, and yet also,
simultaneously, separated from oneself. For the separation
from external reality, for most, is accompanied by an equally
potent separation from one’s true self. As a result, a person
can experience a lack of a central core or clear sense of =EBI’
that invisibly limits all of life-experience. This situation,
including patterns of withdrawal and difficulties on both
mental and emotional levels, displays differently for different
individuals. Yet within the variation there is a common thread.
It is this:

At the core of the choice to embody in a way that causes severe
and painful separation from reality and from the self, is the
motivation on a soul-level to find that very center of self,
and to re-establish a connection with the rest of the world
that has previously been injured or broken.

To put it differently, what we witness as the fundamental
condition of deficiency in those who suffer from mental
disturbance, is actually promoting healing as the soul seeks to
find what is missing and to unite what has come apart. In the
course of time, the drive to locate what has become lost or
distorted, both on the outside and on the inside, becomes the
path of healing.

Today, most of us do not think of symptoms or severely limiting
conditions as a path of healing, generally speaking because
there is so much suffering and limitation involved. And yet
with respect to the mentally ill, the disrupted sense of self
and the search for a core self is, in fact, such a path. It
creates a great need to find one’s way back to a more solid
footing in relation to the external world and also in
relationship to the self. With this in mind, we can begin to
think of mental and emotional disorders as both a problem, and
an answer to a problem. The problem is visible; that it is an
answer, most often is not.

At this point we might ask what difference it would make to
hold such a spiritual perspective. How would it help us? The
answer is twofold. On the level of healing, greater awareness
of the choice made for severe mental and emotional conditions
can lead more directly to other paths of learning for which this
choice has been the main focal point.

Secondly, on the level of everyday reality, experiences of
rejection and humiliation are still common for many whom
society perceives as different.. The aspect of differentness
which manifests in so many ways, often creates a reactiveness
on the part of others that does not allow for personal dignity.
It does not acknowledge the soul within. Were the emotional or
mental disturbance itself seen to be a positive choice of the
soul that has its own purposes in mind, much more in the way of
dignity and strength could be seen as we seek to relate to the
soul within; greater hope would be possible; and the separation
from the rest of life could be lessened.

As we enter a new era of oneness with each other, based on the
greater recognition of the Divine nature of each living being,
a spiritual perspective such as this is a natural outcome.
Such a perspective would help remove the stigma of separation
that so persistently follows those who manifest mental or
emotional disturbance. In its light, we would come to see each
one who has chosen this path as the individual soul that they
are. We would see more of their strength, we would see their
beauty, and we would feel their kinship to us within the
planetary family of which we are each a part.

Buy A Vacation Home In Spain

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

more common for people to buy property in Spain,
especially those living in Europe. They generally use the
property as vacation homes and some rent the property when the
property is not in use. The real estate market has been quite
favorable in many areas, especially the Costa Blanca region
which is one of Spain’s most popular vacation areas.

The first thing you should do when searching for a home in
Spain is to find a reputable real estate agent. You want
someone who is registered and experienced. Unfortunately,
dishonest agents have been known to take advantage of foreign
purchasers who may now understand the law in Spain. Learning
the Spanish language is a good way to improve communication and
avoid such a situation.

It is also a good idea to hire a lawyer to assist you during
the process. The attorney will review the contract, mortgage
information and generally help protect you and your interests.
The greatest benefit of hiring an attorney is that he or she
should be familiar with Spain’s real estate law. Though a real
estate agent may recommend a lawyer to you, it is probably a
better decision to find and hire your own lawyer to ensure that
he or she is protecting only your interests and not working with
the other side also. A friend or someone who has purchased
property in Spain before may be able to recommend a good lawyer
to use.

There are a variety of mortgage types you can obtain. Be sure
to do your research and find the best deal for you. A good
place to start is with a lender in your home country who may be
able to assist you in finding an international mortgage. Many
larger companies offer international mortgages, and generally
offer them on property anticipated to be used as a second home.
Taking out a second mortgage on you existing home is another
popular method for purchasing a vacation home. This is a good
option if the equity is available in your primary home, but
since the home is considered the collateral, be sure you can
afford to make the payments and relaxed taxes. Once you have
decided on the finance method you will use, the internet is a
good place to start researching and comparing loans. However,
as mentioned earlier, you may also want to speak with your
local lender or another lender in your home country. They may,
at least, be able to give you some useful information.

Traveling In Spain

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

g to do after you’ve decided to vacation in Spain
is to get a map of the area. If you’re not sure of where to go,
or if you’d like to plan your itinerary, a detailed map of Spain
is invaluable. It will help you schedule your day trips and
calculate driving times, making for a more enjoyable vacation.

If you’re starting in the north, you’ll find a variety of
coastal resorts and sleepy fishing villages, each with a
different ambiance. The Pyrenees Mountains border Spain and
France, and offer the opportunity to enjoy hiking and walking
tours. You’ll enjoy immersing yourself in Spanish culture in
the small towns, including La Rioja, where you can enjoy the
fruits of the industry here: wine production.

Sprinkled throughout the small towns are fascinating points of
interest, such as ancient monasteries and cave paintings. The
metropolitan areas, including Madrid, the capital of Spain,
bustle with activity and house many historical landmarks,
including ancient churches and museums. Depending on your
interests, you can enjoy natural, outdoor activities, or more
fast-paced ones.

The center of the country is populated by several mountain
ranges. The Sierra de Guadarrama, Sierra de Gredos and Montes
de Toledo are the biggest ranges in this area. These areas are
generally only visited when travelers are en route to the other
side of the country.

The Mediterranean Sea borders the east side of the country.
This region is divided into smaller coastal areas, such as the
Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Here you’ll find the resort
towns of Alicante, Torrevieja and Barcelona. Tourists
generally flock here for the beaches, shopping and nightlife.
Travelers are also drawn to the wide variety of golf courses in
this area.

Whether you’re traveling with a group or on your own, be sure
to get a map of the area. Even if you’re with a group, you’ll
still find it helpful to have a map, to keep from getting lost.
Identify the areas on your map that you’ll be visiting, to
ensure you’re on track. If you’re traveling independently, it
helps to have a very detailed map. If you’re driving,
familiarizing yourself with the lay of the land, the major
thoroughfares and the local streets may take some of the stress
out of driving in a strange land.

With a detailed map and a brief overview of the popular areas
of Spain, you’ll be equipped to plan the vacation that you’ll
enjoy.

Ibs And Acupuncture

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

becoming one of the more popular alternative and
complimentary therapies used by IBS sufferers to help alleviate
symptoms. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine that is
designed to restore health by improving and bringing balance to
qi – the body’s natural energy flow. Acupuncture works to
restore the proper function of organs, muscles, glands, nerves
and vessels.

How can acupuncture improve IBS symptoms? Acupuncture is
recognized as being an effective therapy for treating the
following conditions which are often symptoms of IBS:

- Muscle cramps
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation
- Diarrhea

In addition, acupuncture effectively reduces stress and other
negative issues that often cause IBS symptoms to occur. Some of
these include:

- Nervousness
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Menstrual cramps

As was previously mentioned, acupuncture is based on improving
and brining balance to qi that flows through all of the 14
unseen channels in the body known as meridians. A person with
IBS usually has a deficiency of qi in the spleen, lung, liver,
kidney and large intestine meridians, so these are the areas
that will likely be targeted during an acupuncture session.
That being said, you need to understand that each person is
treated differently depending on where their discomfort is
located.

In order to help improve the qi flow within the targeted
meridians, tiny, solid, disposable needles are individually
inserted into specific acupoints within the body. How deep the
needles are inserted depends on the thickness of the muscle.
Acupoints (trigger points), are precise points of the body
where the meridians surface has deeply penetrated into the
tissues and organs.

The insertion of the needle is usually painless and is a
sensation often described as a mosquito bite. Most people only
feel a slight achy or numbing feeling in the targeted area.

After the needle has been inserted, they may be twirled or
connected to an electrical current to help stimulate the
targeted meridian. Needles may be left in between 20 – 60
minutes. All sensations that are experienced during an
acupuncture session disappear with the removal of the needles.

Aside from acupuncture needles, another popular technique that
acupuncturists use for IBS is moxibustion. This is a method in
which mugwort herb is burned over precise acupoints.
Moxibustion is used because it is believed to penetrate deeper
into the body than the needles.

Although Chinese medicine believes that acupuncture is
successful at relieving symptoms due to reestablishing balance
to qi, Western medicine believe that acupuncture treatment
causes inflammation in the body, which causes it to release
natural pain killing hormones – endorphins. Despite what the
actual truth may be, it is clear that for many IBS sufferers,
acupuncture has provided them relief from abdominal pain,
cramping, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

Acupuncture is a safe alternative treatment for most people,
but you should discuss acupuncture treatment with your doctor
first before engaging in the therapy. You should also know that
it often takes several acupuncture sessions before a person
begins to feel relief from their symptoms. Finally, make sure
you seek treatment from a qualified and experienced
acupuncturist.

Should You Treat Your Endometriosis With Hormone Therapy?

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

e still not sure what causes endometriosis, but
it is clear that the female sex hormone estrogen, which stops
being produced during menopause, feeds the growth of abnormal
endometrial tissue.

Unfortunately, for most young teens and women in their
reproductive years, menopause is still many years away, which
means they are left to deal with the painful symptoms of
endometriosis, with no relief in sight. Thus, what is often
recommended for many non-menopausal women is hormone therapy.

Hormone therapy is one of the most successful treatments for
endometriosis, as it helps around 80-90% of the women who take
it. Hormone therapy controls estrogen, helping to alleviate
pain caused by endometriosis. It can also reduce the size and
amount of endometrial implants, stopping endometriosis from
spreading.

However, it is important to note that hormone therapy does not
improve a woman’s fertility. Therefore, if you are concerned
about infertility or wish to become pregnant, these therapies
are not an option for you. Moreover, young teenage girls, who
have not reached the end of puberty, are usually unable to take
this form of treatment, as it poses a risk to their development.

In addition, there are various types of hormone therapy and
each woman responds to treatment differently. Furthermore, like
taking any medication, there are always pros and cons that need
to be carefully considered.

The following is information about the most popular forms of
hormone therapies used to treat endometriosis:

Birth control pills – This is the most popular therapy and is
considered safe to use for long term use. A woman can generally
use it until menopause. Birth control pills are designed to
control menses and stop ovulation. Without ovulation,
endometrial implants can no longer grow and will shrink.

Birth control pills lower the risk of ovarian cancer, and are
generally safe for most women. This therapy is available in
pill, skin patch or vaginal ring form. It has few negative side
effects including headaches, nausea, breast tenderness,
depression, mood swings, and irregular, light or absent menses.
It also increases the risk of blood clots and slightly increases
the risk of breast cancer.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) – This therapy
decreases estrogen levels to those experienced after menopause,
and can only be taken for the short term (no more than 6
months). GnRH-a increases the risk of bone loss, which can
cause osteroporosis, and is why it is usually taken with
progestin to help prevent thinning of bones and other
menopausal symptoms. GnRH-a is often used to help prolong the
relief of endometriosis pain after surgery, as it works to
prevent the return of endometriosis.

High dose progestin – This therapy is taken in the form of
pills or a shot. It is designed to produce progestin levels in
the body that mirror pregnancy. This therapy ceases monthly
ovulation, and decreases estrogen which allows endometriosis
growths to shrink, alleviating pain in most women. Progestin
can be taken for long term (usually no more than 2 years).

The side effects of progestin include depression, bloating,
breast tenderness, weight gain, light or absent menses, risk of
bone loss if taken for longer than 2 years, and fertility can
take up to a year or longer before it returns.

Danazol – This therapy decreases estrogen levels and increases
the level of androgen (male) hormones. Danazol also puts the
body into a menopause-like state. Although it effectively
shrinks endometrial growths and reduces pain, its side effects
can include muscle cramps, weight gain, acne, skin rash, oily
hair and skin, decrease in breast size, facial and body hair,
and even voice deepening. To make matters worse, most of these
male-transforming side effects can be permanent.

Danazol is often short term therapy, and is usually the last
doctors will recommend.

Talk to your doctor to find out if hormone therapy is right for
you.

Why Does My Doctor Care About Diet And Nutrition If I Have Arthritis?

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

ion about arthritis is just that, why does your
doctor care about your diet and nutrition? After all, this is
your bone you are talking about, not your heart! Although many
individuals mistakenly believe that it is necessary for them to
repair their condition through medication and maybe even
surgery, you can actually improve your pain levels and even
improving the progress of the disease by simply paying
attention to your diet and nutrition. Although they don’t seem
to go together, what you eat is really what you are. It is
essential to take into consideration the vast need that you
have.

Arthritis And Diet

One of the key things that you can do right now to improve your
arthritis pain is to lose weight. Even if you are not obese,
just dropping a few pounds of weight can cause many benefits to
happen. First off, if you have arthritis in your hips and into
your knees, losing weight will help to lessen the load that
those joints have to do. Instead of worrying about moving the
extra weight, the joints are under less pressure and therefore
can perform in a better way instead. You’ll find that losing
weight is an important part of the process of getting your body
back into shape.

In addition to this, you may want to take a look at your
nutrition level. If you eat foods that are not good for you,
you are not giving your body what it needs to perform to the
level that you are asking it to. Remember, a body that has an
inflammation such as that of rheumatoid arthritis is in series
trouble and needs help in the form of extra nutrients to get
through it. The body is trying to repair the damage and often
if it is not getting what it needs to make this happen.

What To Do?

Since diet and nutrition do play a significant role in your
arthritis condition, you should make the changes necessary to
improve the health and wellness that you face. For starters,
you need to improve the nutrient level that you get. To do
this, add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. You need to
take into consideration the vast number of nutrients including
antioxidants that fruits and vegetables give you. In addition
to this, add whole grains to you diet as well as low fat
proteins. Here, you are working on losing a few pounds in a
healthy, non painful way. Both parts are essential, though,
for giving your body what it needs to maintain your health and
well being.

Diet and nutrition can help to reduce the pain that you are in.
Just losing a few pounds will help. If you do so with the help
of exercise, you can even increase the muscles near the effected
area which also can help to improve the level of pain that you
face. As you can see, diet and nutrition can’t heal your
arthritis pain. In addition, you need to take into account the
other treatment options out there for you. Combined, you can
find plenty of benefits and relief, too.

Closet Organizers Save Space

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

ink about organizing their lives to save time,
they rarely think that their closet – the smallest room in the
house – is one of the most important rooms to have
well-organized. But common sense says it is.

That’s because the closet contains some of your most valuable
possessions – your clothing!

Look in your closet right now. What do you see? Are there piles
of old clothes on the floor? Are they burying something
important? Do you have boxes stacked precariously on a single
high shelf, ready to come tumbling down at the slightest touch?
Do you spend several precious morning minutes trying to find
something to wear?

Then you need to organize your closet. And it’s easier than
ever to do that, because there are dozens of closet organizers
on the market, so you’re sure to be able to find something to
fit your price range.

What kind of closet organizer do you need, to fit your
lifestyle?

Shelving systems
Wire rack shelving systems are perhaps the quickest and easiest
kind of unit to install. They are light, but sturdy, and you can
see what’s on the bottom! This type of system most typically is
installed at the top of the closet, with the clothes hanging
below, and is used for boxes and other large items.

If you want a more elegant look to those shelves, you can find
complete systems made out of such hardwoods as maple…and if
you are looking for sturdy but utilitarian you can even get
shelving made out of steel.

Shoes
It’s possible to obtain a shoe bag that you hang around a door
knob, but some people think that looks tacky. You can also get
tilted shelves so that you can lay out your shoes for easy
viewing.

Hanging Units
If you’ve got long coats and short coats, long dresses and
short dresses, then you may sometimes find yourself wishing
that you had a way of compensating for those differences. Well,
all you need to do is acquire an adjustable hanging unit or two,
or even a “valet pole.”

Drawers
As with anything else, you can find a drawer system to suit
your pocketbook, from wire to plastic to metal to wood.

Of course, once you have an organization system in place in
your closet, the trick is to use it! It does take a little bit
of discipline to train yourself – or your children – to put
things back where they came from, to put things away “now” so
you don’t have to spend 20 minutes cleaning up all those “I’ll
do this later” things, later.
