Learning Spanish Part Twenty: The Silent Way Method

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
A most bizarre philosophy of education called “Discovery
Learning,” based partly on the educational ideas of Rousseau,
Pestalozzi and Dewey, led to The Silent Way Method of Second
Language acquisition. It also enjoyed the support of
psycho-babblists (psychologists) Piaget, Bruner, and Papert.
Seymour Papert said,

“You can’t teach people everything they need to know. The best
you can do is position them where they can find what they need
to know when they need to know it.”

Though it is a nice-sounding axiom, I am reminded of the
countries of the world in which this philosophy of education
does not reign supreme. The students in these countries overtake
our kids in almost every academic subject. The word “they” in
the above quote bothers me. Who does the “they” refer to? A
bunch of kids who do not want to be in a classroom learning
anything? Kids forced to be there because Mom and Dad say so? I
know “Discovery Learning” all too well since I received my
“secondary non-education” in one of these schools.

In response to what was considered as the “demonic” rote memory
of anything having to do with education, The Silent Method of
Second Language acquisition arose. In this “affective” approach,
” The teacher tries to “facilitate” activities whereby the
students discover for themselves the conceptual “rules”
governing the language, rather than imitating or memorizing them
- Brown (1994:63).” Also, the students had to somehow “develop
their own inner criteria for correctness” (Larsen Freeman,
1986:62).”

This touchy-feely method of learning depends on the “good
intentions” of learners. It also depends on the learners wanting
to be in the educational situation in which they are, of course,
forced by the law of the land and the law of home to
participate. This approach to American education, in which I was
a high school victim, resulted in woefully equipped and
inadequately trained high school graduates (no one, of course,
was ever failed) trying to get into college (one of our English
classes was called, “Sports Illustrated”).

Reasons for Failure:

Teacher is too passive. In favor of the student engaging in his
own “Discovery Learning,” the teacher would not step in to
correct or guide the learner. Students would learn incorrect
pronunciation in favor of the teacher remaining “silent.”

Students miss out on cultural input that could be given within
the language from the teacher’s active participation.

Is Steam Cleaning For Me?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
If it is time to have your homes carpet cleaned you might be
trying to decide which method is right for you. Well you have a
lot of different methods to choose from. One popular method is
steam cleaning also known as hot water extraction. Read this
article to learn whether or not this method of carpet cleaning
is right for you.

Steam cleaning is perhaps one of the most popular methods of
carpet cleaning. It has many benefits over other cleaning
methods. For example, it has the best flushing capability of any
other cleaning method. The average steam cleaner will use about
fifty gallons to clean an average sized home. This is important
to you because it means that more of the soil is moved out of
the home instead of just moved around. If you ahe pets who have
had accidents this is especially important.

Another advantage of steam cleaning is that it allows for the
use of more specialty cleaning chemicals. Since most of the
industry is geared towards steam cleaning, most of the chemicals
are designed to be used in conjunction with steam cleaning. Some
specialty cleaners do not work well without steam cleaning or
should not be used without it due to the need to be thoroughly
flushed from the carpet. This means that with steam cleaning
your carpet will get cleaner.

There are some disadvantages to steam cleaning however. For
example, it is more susceptible to user error. You need a
skilled technician to do it properly and a bad cleaner can
really do some damage. It will also take longer to dry than
other methods but not as long as you may think. Most steam
cleaning jobs are dry in two to six hours.

Hopefully this article will help you decide which method is
right for you. If you have more questions you should contact
your local cleaning service. They will be more than happy to
explain the process to you fully.

Once A Year Body Detox And Cleanse To Boost Your Health

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
The longer you live the more chances you will accumulate toxins
in the body. It is not uncommon to accumulate toxins from the
environment you live in. A yearly cleanse is something
everybody should consider to help keep the body’s functioning
properly and healthy.

Our bodies consistently detoxify itself every day and the
primary organs that do this detox are the liver and kidneys.
The body’s own natural functions can cause toxins while trying
to detox itself and these toxins can impair the body’s ability
to function efficiently, which can lead to debilitating disease
and physical problems if left unchecked.

If you think you may have a toxic buildup in the body, there
are some ways to know if the body needs to be detoxified. Some
signs of toxic overload are fatigue, illness, constipation, gas,
skin problems, nausea, PMS, depression, and poor circulation.

There are ways to rid the body of toxins naturally such as a
cleansing or detox diet. Detoxification involves changes in
diet along with an increase in fluid consumption specifically
clean water. With a good dietary change, herbs can be used to
help the detox process along.

We will first look at the liver. The liver is extremely
important in ridding the body of toxins. The liver cleanses the
blood and helps aid in digestion of the foods we eat.
Everything we eat, breath, and absorb through the skin is
processed by the liver; over time the liver can become over
worked. When the liver becomes over worked it can not process
and detox all the toxins entering the body, so the body will
store these toxins and after years and years of storage, these
toxins will cause disease.

The liver uses enzymes to break down toxins into water and fat
soluble substances so that the kidneys and colon can eliminate
them. The liver manufactures these enzymes upon demand. The
more demand there is in the body, the more the liver is stressed
and over time, damage can occur. There is hope from herbs like
milk thistle, turmeric, licorice, and schizandra.

Milk thistle has a compound called Silymarin, shown in many
studies to protect the liver. Milk thistle contains silybin,
amines, thyramine, and histamine, known to fight toxins and help
stimulate the production and flow of bile. Studies have shown
that milk thistle can benefit severe liver disorders such as
hepatitis and cirrhosis, as well as a general liver restoration
and strengthening herb.

Turmeric is a spice used in Asian dishes but recent studies
have found it to also be liver protective. Turmeric has similar
properties to glycyrrhizin found in licorice. Turmeric is a
powerful antioxidant and studies have shown turmeric to increase
enzymes in the liver that prevents inflammation. Like milk
thistle, turmeric can increase the bile output in the liver.
Turmeric can also breakdown carcinogens and toxins so that these
harmful chemicals can be eliminated from the body without doing
the body any harm.

As mentioned above, licorice contains glycyrrhizin and
glycyrrhetinic acid which stimulates interferon production in
the body. Interferons protect the immune system. Licorice
contains liver protective properties preventing damage due to
toxic exposure. Studies have shown that glycyrrhizin can help
prevent cellular damage in the liver. Glycyrrhizin has been
used to treat hepatitis B and has been shown to improve liver
function as well as reduce the enzyme levels used to measure
liver damage.

Schizandra in some studies have shown to protect the liver from
toxic build up. This herb can also boost the immune system by
helping the liver eliminate the toxins that have been building
up in the body. Excess amounts of toxins in the body can lead
to immune system disorders. Schizandra has also shown in
studies to protect against the effects of alcohol in mice and
other studies have shown this herb to have regenerative
properties in the liver. The Chinese have used Schizandra for
infectious hepatitis and also as a liver protecting herb it can
encourage liver regeneration after injury or disease. Other
herbs that are considered beneficial for the liver are
dandelion, burdock, and barberry.

The kidneys are the second most important organ next to the
liver for cleansing the body. All the blood in your body will
pass through the kidneys many times each day. Your kidneys will
filter out toxins into urine and help maintain a healthy
electrolyte balance as well as manufacture regulatory hormones
for blood pressure. The kidneys control the rate calcium is
metabolized and aids in the production of red blood cells.
Keeping the kidneys healthy is very important; there are some
herbs available that can help stimulate kidney function such as,
parsley, yarrow, dandelion, and kelp.

For many years, herbalists have known about parley and its
properties. Parsley is a powerful diuretic often recommended for
those with kidney problems. This herb has been shown to inhibit
the re-absorption of salt into the body tissues which increases
the herbs activity as a diuretic. Parsley helps to improve and
increase urination allowing toxins to be eliminated more readily
by the kidneys. One component found in parsley seed has been
used in drugs to treat urinary and bladder infections.

Yarrow has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
The active ingredient that gives yarrow this ability is called
azulene. With urinary problem comes inflammation and herbs that
can relieve inflammation can improve urination and alleviate and
ease urination problems. Yarrow can also help regulate liver
function.

Dandelion found in almost every yard in America is a great
diuretic similar to parsley. Dandelion is high in potassium,
when you are on diuretics potassium is eliminated from the body
and needs to be replenished. Dandelion can be used to relieve
water retention as well as help increase urine flow without
causing an imbalance in potassium or the electrolytes in the
body. Dandelion is a wonderful herb, in human studies have
shown to increase bile flow which is beneficial to the liver,
gallstones, jaundice, and the bile ducts. Dandelion is
considered a bitter herb and its bitter properties have been
shown to improve the release of toxins from the body.

The longer we live the more toxins our body will store, kelp is
a wonderful herb found in the sea. Kelp has been shown to
protect the body from absorption of toxic chemicals. One active
component in kelp called sodium alginate which has been found to
protect the body from radiation exposure and help the body
remove heavy metals.

If you have never detoxified the body before, it is never too
late to start today. Whether you choose to change your diet or
purchase herbs for detox, cleansing the body will help fight
disease, help your organs work better, and boost over all
health. Herbs to detox the liver and kidneys can be found at
your friendly online vitamin store.

H-F-L Team How To Write Up A Yearly Business Plan

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
It’s important to have a business plan for your business each
year so that you can see what your needs are for the coming year
and to show yourself and the bank how far you have progressed
since your original business plan was written. A new business
writes a business plan in order to show their intentions to
operate and to provide information to financial institutions in
support of start up capital and funding for other operations. In
most cases, the banks want to see three to five year projections
showing your intention for the funding. Depending on the scope
of the business, they may only finance the first year, and will
want additional proof that the business is progressing along the
terms of the original business plan before they will advance any
more funds.

Since you are not able to really show much in the way of
financial records, having a business plan also shows potential
creditors what you anticipate for the future of your business.
They can then compare this to your original plan to verify if
you are moving along as planned. They do not want to be stuck
with an uncollectible loan by advancing funds to a business that
has no potential of becoming successful. Even if you are a
little behind your original projections, they are able to see if
the potential is there for improvement, and may even make
suggestions for helping you reach your original goals. On the
other hand, if your progress is way behind original projections,
that can be a sign that your business is failing, so it’s likely
that you will not receive any more funding until you can prove
the business is on its way to profitability.

It’s normal for any business to take three to five years to
turn a profit, but if you aren’t showing improvement, that is an
area for concern. As you enter into your second year, you should
be showing less of a loss and more of a profit even if you don’t
yet show a net gain in income. Even if you aren’t looking for
additional funding, you should look at this as a warning sign
and start making some changes so that you can your business what
you originally intended. It may mean your prices are too low, or
your expenses are excessive for the amount of business you have
and need to be cut. For instance, if you are selling products
from a website, investigate what others are charging for the
same type of items to see if you are in line with the industry
standard in pricing. If you sell services, find out what others
are charging for the same service and maybe your prices are too
high, and thus people are going elsewhere for the same service.
In reality, these should have been checked first, but some
people in their haste to begin a business forget the most
important step of price comparison.

Teaching English In Japan: Becoming A Jet-setter

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
There is, in Japan, a great demand for native English speakers
teaching English, but most of that demand comes from private
English “conversation schools”, or Ekaiwa, or JET, the Japan
Exchange and Teaching Program.

Teaching English in Japanese Ekaiwa

Ekaiwa are very common in Japan, and are “schools” in which
those teaching English will be actually offering individual of
small class sessions of conversations. Ekaiwa give Japanese of
every age a chance to engage in real English conversation;
teaching English in this way can give the teacher a chance to
see their students progress in a very short time.

There are chains of ekaiwa in Japan, rather like there are
chains of ballroom dancing studios in the US. The premier
chains include Geos and ECC, which have upwards of two hundred
ekaiwa, but there are thousands of smaller schools. Salaries
and working conditions will vary according to the money behind
each operation.

Those wanting to teach English in the Japanese ekaiwas can
contact one of the recruitment offices that the chain ekaiwa
operators have established abroad, in particular in the US, UK,
Canada, and Australia. While the better schools in the most
desirable locations may require degrees in English and teaching
experience, many ekaiwa only require a college degree.

The JET Program

Many people, however, find that the premiere English teaching
jobs in Japan come through the JET program, overseen by the
Japanese government. The JET program, while it does include
employment teaching English in Japanese schools on a daily
basis, is really designed to expose the Japanese people to
foreigners.

Most of those teaching English in the JET program are assistant
teachers in Japanese middle and high schools. They must be
under forty, and have both excellent language skills and a
college degree–although the field does not matter–and they are
not allowed to choose the part of Japan in which they will be
working. If accepted to the JET program, however, their airfare
will be provided. For more info see
http://www.teachingjobshelp.com/ on Teaching.

Those accepted to teach English in the JET program will have to
have great interpersonal skills, because they will be immersed
in a foreign culture and left more or less to their own devices
as far as seeing that their basic needs are met. And they will
be responsible for representing their native countries while in
Japan.

Given a choice between the ekaiwa and JET English teaching
positions, most of those considering a job in Japan opt for the
JET program, which offers better salaries and, most of the time,
better working conditions. But if you are young and
resourceful, and want to see Japan while getting paid for doing
something that is second nature to you–speaking English–an
ekaiwa job can be just the ticket!.

Spanish (From Spain) Wedding Traditions

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

#=
#################
Modern Wedding in Spain:

Suits:

The bride usually wears a white wedding dress of fiancee
although the last tendency are cream colors. Also, in the civil
ceremonies, suits of another colors are used allthough
minoritary. The veil is usually part of the dress, although it
is hardly used to cover the face. Bride’s mother shows the dress
to her family a day before, groom should not see it. Usually one
of the shoe should be lightly over the other to be a luckily
married couple.

The groom wears jacket suits that range from the smoking to
suits of very modern cut, the classic colors are gray, brown and
sometimes white cream. Necktie are in very few occasions
pajarita.

Ceremony:

The celebration begins in house of the groom where the friends
and relatives are going to gather him, here the parents of the
groom invite to the assistants to a small snack. When coming out
of house the friends of the groom usually burn rockets (
fireworks) to celebrate it.

Also it is possible that in the first place the fiance takes
shelter in the house of the godmother of the wedding (that can
habitually be the mother of the fiance or the godmother of
baptism) and then they go to the fiance home.

From here the retinue goes to house of the bride or to the
church, depending on the customs of each zone.

The godfather will be with the relatives and friends of the
fiancee at brides house. Bride and groom find them and together
they go to the church. The bride will go of the arm of her
godfather and the groom with the godmother. For longer distances
a special car is hired, may be limousine or a horses car.
Exiting from brides house the friends newly use fireworks to
celebrate the wedding.

If the bride is waiting at the church then the groom goes
directly there.

At the ceremony bride and groom gives one another the rings and
usually ( but not ever) they interchange the “arras” ( a sort of
coins). Catholic ceremonies last about ? of hour and assistents
may take also communion. Civil ceremonies are much shorter (
about ? of hour) and are directed by the town major.

Once finished the ceremony and pictures taken with friends and
relatives in the church, the newly married couple goes out of
the church, their friends and relatives are waiting for them to
throw rice over both in a sort of luck desire. Finally friends
celebrate the wedding again with fireworks and rockets.

All together they go to the restaurant or special wedding
celebrations local, a tipical spanish wedding is formed by
around 200 =96 300 people.

All kinds of food and drinks are served, mostly begining with
light food like jamon, aperitives, cheese, etc. Then a normally
composed of seafood (prawns, Norway lobsters, etc) dish is
served and after a meat dish.

The nuptial cake is served, the couple has to cut this cake and
give each other a piece.

Depending of zones, the friends of the groom makes a joke with
him like making him to look for money in to a sand box or water,
putting him a disguise, etc usually it ’s something related with
his job or hobbies. Same is made with the bride and his friends,
cutting the panty’s league was a must in every wedding.

The celebration continues long time in the night with music and
dance, the kind of music depends on the zone, but it is usaualy
modern music.

Music To Meditate By

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

==================
Some people prefer to meditate silently without any music but
there are others who prefer to meditate with music. Different
people like different music to meditate by. Some like to have
music playing in the background while they meditate while others
like the form of meditation that involves making music to
meditate by.

Meditation is a simple and easy art and even children can
easily practice it. With music to meditate by meditation can be
made even more interesting for children. You get a choice of
meditation music that is especially meant for children.

Whatever form of meditation you choose, it is important to
remember that music to meditate by should be simple, calm,
soothing and peaceful. It should induce feelings of inner peace

and unproductive. It is distracting and creates feelings of
chaos. The most popular musical instruments associated with
meditation include the sitar, flute, Tibetan singing bow and the
tambora.

While some people use music to meditate by, there are many
musicians who use meditation to calm themselves and to stay
focused before any major performance. If you are using music as
a means of meditation, you should try and stop doing everything
else and just focus on the music in order to get the full
benefits of the music. It also helps you to enjoy the music
more.

on online websites that offer different kinds of meditation
music that you can buy. Some websites allow you to listen to a

Why Massage?
As a general rule of thumb, when a hobby, a pastime or in
this instance, a treatment has been around for a
significant period of time, it’s generally because it
continues to intrigue, to give pleasure or to give
significant benefits to the participant.

In the case of massage therapy, the first recorded
application was some 5000 years ago, although arguably
massage therapy has been practiced for many thousands of
years prior to this.

Such longevity for any therapeutic therapy suggests that
there is significant merit for its continued use, in fact
massage therapy has never been more popular, and is now
firmly established as an invaluable tool available to any
medical practitioner in the pursuit of good health and
wellbeing for their patients.

The benefits of massage therapy extends beyond the
physical, and are widely acknowledged to bring huge
psychological improvements. Anyone who’s had a massage will
confirm the `feel good’ factor they experience immediately
after, a state which comes about because of the direct
effects of massage.

What’s the cause of this `feel good’ factor?

The most likely candidate is endorphins. Endorphins are
naturally occurring wonder drugs produced and released by
the brain. They are released during massage or exercise and
are directly responsible for the state of euphoria often
experienced by the lucky recipients.

If massage therapy produces such highly desirable results,
a reasonable question to ask is, where do I start?. A quick
glance in the yellow pages reveals any number of masseurs,
clinics or health spa’s in your area, so accessibility
should be no problem. Unfortunately for some strange
reason, massage and massage therapy, when not prescribed by
a physician, seems to have become the preserve of the
wealthy, which is extremely unfortunate, not least because
of the benefits that can be enjoyed by all.

Most massage requires an additional pair of hands, however,
facial massage is an activity which can be learned and
performed by any individual. The appeal of self massage
goes a step further due to the fact that every individual
can control their environment completely with the addition
of aromatherapy and relaxing music and all important
privacy.

So do yourself a massive favour, start by giving your face
a very satisfying therapeutic massage, in the comfort of
your own home and in no time at all, you’ll start to look
and feel good, and who knows where your new found feel good
factor will lead.

Happy massaging.

Designing a Superstar Team
We’ve all been part of teams in one form or another.
You’ve probably had “team” experiences since you were very
young, whether on a sports-field, the debate team , with a
Girl or Boy Scout troupe, or with some volunteer
organization. You most likely enjoyed study or project
groups in college. In your professional life, you quickly
learned that despite your best solo efforts to change the
world-or at least your industry-doing the best job and
building a successful business meant surrounding yourself
with the best individuals.

You might consider it a given that as a business owner or
entrepreneur you want to surround yourself with the ideal
team. On the other hand, you may be a solo entrepreneur
who considers your helpers-accountant, webmaster, etc.-to
be merely a part of the peripheral landscape. Either way,
intentionally communicating your purpose, aligning your
team around it, and communicating your expectations and
your passion, can help you attract the people who want to
go there with you. Before you can do that, though, you
have be able to define what makes not just a team=85but a
Super Star Team.

First of all, a group is not necessarily a team, especially
in today’s virtual world, where people with varied skills
are dispersed and may be asked to collaborate from around
the globe. Second, teams rarely come together simply for
the sake of being a team; they come together united for a
common purpose=85one built on shared objectives. Super Star
teams are comprised of incredibly bright and talented
people who already have individual track records of
success. They come together with their collective talents
to achieve new, fresh and exciting things=85to achieve Super
Star objectives. The team creates a competitive advantage
and works together to achieve superior levels of
performance.

Before you conclude that this team building process sounds
like a walk in the park with everyone stepping in sync,
think again. By its very nature, the dynamics of working
with a group of brilliant, talented, focused people will
stretch every member and require them to tread on uncharted
territory. But what an exciting trek! In such an
environment, the work remains challenging and new.

How do you build a Super Star Team? Ask yourself these
questions:

1. Who is on your team?

It is important to realize and appreciate that beyond the
people you hire and the partners with whom you
interact-people who are actively engaged in maintaining and
growing your business on a daily basis-your team is really
anyone who is supportive of your accomplishments. Don’t
overlook the sphere of influence that your family and
friends are part of. Ultimately, it is your responsibility
to monitor who provides positive support and who extends
negative expectations. Surround yourself with people who
know you are shooting for the moon and who wholeheartedly
support and reflect your core values.

2. Where are you going and does your team know the
itinerary?

You probably realize the importance of keeping your
employees and your executive team up to speed on your
vision. But what about your family, friends, or the other
people whose influence you feel most in your daily life?
Have you clearly articulated to them where you are going
and how you plan to get there? If you don’t share your
business plan and your passion with the people who are
closest to you, how will they know how to best support you?
Don’t assume that comments you make in passing will drive
home the gravity of your message. Be specific. Sharing
your vision can create a dynamic whereby your core values
become more clearly defined in the give and take of
conversation. Make specific time with people to discuss
where you are going and how they can help you get there.
Express your passion respectfully and individually with the
people who matter most to you, and it will spread like
wildfire.

3. What qualities are most important in your team members?

Integrity? Passion? Tenacity? Knowing the qualities you
value most is only the half of the equation. It’s also
up to you to create the environments that allow and, in
fact, challenge your team to grow and nurture those
qualities. Creating such a platform will also encourage
people to admit when they fall short, take constructive
criticism, and make adjustments in their performance
because they are working within a supportive network of
well defined boundaries.

4. Are you tolerating people who don’t embody your key
values or qualities? If so, why?

Are you afraid of conflict? Do you like to play the
martyr? Do you want everyone to like you? Are you afraid
of being “wrong”? While any one or all of these may be
true at different times, the key to addressing this
question goes back to defining and adhering to your
must-haves, your core values. When you begin each day with
a commitment to them, you won’t have time or energy to
waste on anyone or anything that does not remain in
alignment with what matters most to you and your business.

Essentially, to build a Super Star Team, you must first be
a Super Star yourself. There are several keys to being the
kind of leader that attracts the best of the best.

1. Think big! Visionary thinkers create visionary
businesses.

2. Think fast! Stay on your toes and expect the same from
others. A Harvard degree doesn’t necessarily equate to
best and brightest. Whether a potential team member is
book smart or street smart, be sure the person is a quick
study with the intellectual and emotional capacity to
navigate your growing business.

3. Think now! Change is good. Be cutting edge and ride
the tides and you’ll attract people who feel empowered by
that kind of exciting energy.

4. Think fun! When you are having fun and doing what you
love, quality people with similar values will find you and
your business attractive. Once you have a Super Star Team
in place, fun is one of the things that will keep them
there.

A Super Star Team evolves out of the synergistic energy
that you put in motion. It begins and grows from being
absolutely intentional about your values and your vision.
When you have those two things defined, you’ll find
yourself working with people who constantly inspire and
challenge you=85and not by accident. You will have created a
purposeful dynamic in which you and the people who matter
most in your life will accomplish great things and touch
many lives.
